The BioShopper
biodegradable grocery bags are
made in part from corn, an annually renewable resource.
They will
fully compost in 30-60 days in composting
conditions.
Countries that have
banned or taken action to discourage the use of
plastic bags include Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland,
Italy, South Africa and Taiwan. Mumbai, India, also
has banned plastic bags. The City of San Francisco
has levied a 17 cent tax on all plastic grocery
bags.
The amount of
petroleum used to make a plastic bag would drive a
car about 11 meters. 230,000 plastic supermarket
bags are dumped in landfills
every hour. About 100,000 whales, seals, turtles
and other marine animals are killed by plastic bags
each year worldwide, according to Planet Ark, an
international environmental group. It is estimated
that Americans use 84 billion plastic bags annually. |
